How do I know if a diamond has fluorescence?

Fluorescence is not the boogeyman the internet makes it out to be. I have set hundreds of fluorescent diamonds. Maybe a handful looked milky in direct sunlight. The rest? You would never know unless someone handed you a UV lamp. But the question still comes up on every third consultation, so let me tell you exactly how I check for it, and what I actually think when a stone shows some blue glow.

First, what you are looking for: fluorescence is a diamond's reaction to longwave ultraviolet light. About 25% to 35% of diamonds have it. The most common color is blue, but yellow and white fluorescence happen too, rarely. Under a UV source, a stone with strong fluorescence turns a chalky, electric blue. Think tonic water under blacklight. The effect stops the second the UV cuts off.

How to check before you buy. If the stone has a grading report, look at the fluorescence field. GIA grades it as None, Faint, Medium, Strong, or Very Strong. IGI does the same. That line tells you what the lab saw under controlled UV. It does not tell you what the stone actually looks like in sunlight. Lab reports are a start, not the end of the story.

You can buy a small UV lamp - 365 nanometers is the right wavelength - from Amazon for about $20. Shine it on the stone in a dark room. If it glows blue, you have your answer. I keep one on my desk, not because I hunt for fluorescence, but because clients bring it up and seeing it calms them down. A jeweler you trust can do the same thing in five seconds. Just ask.

Here is the part no one talks about: fluorescence can actually help a diamond look whiter. Fluorescence is a blue emission. Blue cancels yellow. A GIA H or I color stone with Medium Blue fluorescence can face up like a G or even F in daylight. The trade has known this for decades. When I am sourcing off-white antique stones for a client on a budget, I deliberately look for medium blue fluorescence. It is a quiet trick that saves money and often makes the ring look better.

The real problem - and this is rare - is when the fluorescence is so strong it hazes the stone. I saw it once in a D color, internally flawless, 1.8 carat oval with Very Strong Blue. In sunlight, the diamond looked like a drop of skim milk. We returned it. That is the scenario that gave fluorescence its bad name. But the haziness is not from fluorescence alone. It's from a combination of boron impurities and structural defects that scatter light. I have a 1.2 carat J color old European cut with Strong Blue in my own collection. Sunlight makes it sing. No milkiness at all.

So how do you know for sure? Look at the report, then ask the seller for a three-second video under a UV pen lamp. Then ask to see the diamond in direct sunlight, or at least a video taken outdoors. If the stone turns foggy or translucent like iced glass, skip it. If it just glows a little extra blue, ignore the chatter. You are not buying a UV lamp. You are buying a ring, and real sunlight is the only test that matters.
