They want to know if the stone is real, right now, without spending money on a lab report. I'll tell you the same thing I tell them: You can get a pretty good idea in five minutes with a loupe and a little practice. You cannot get certainty. Certainty costs a GIA cert, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.
Here's where to start. Pick up the stone with tweezers, if you have them. A clean fingertip works too. Breathe on it like you're fogging a mirror. A diamond disperses heat so fast the fog vanishes almost instantly. A cubic zirconia or glass stays fogged for a second or two. That's the breath test, and it's the one reliable party trick. It won't separate diamond from moissanite, though. Moissanite has thermal conductivity close enough to pass.
Next, get a loupe. Not a magnifying glass - a real 10x triplet loupe. Look at the girdle. On a natural diamond, you'll often see tiny naturals, trigons, or a slightly frosted texture. Most synthetics and simulants look too clean, too perfect. If you see a stamp on the girdle - "GIA" followed by a number - your stone was already graded, and you can look up the report. Sharp facet junctions: a diamond's edges are crisp as a razor. CZ looks a little soft, almost melted, because the material is softer and wears differently over time.
Last March a woman named Elena came in with her grandmother's ring. She'd done the breath test and the loupe check and was convinced it was a diamond. Under my microscope, it was a really good moissanite from the 1990s, before the patent expired. The double refraction was there - a slight doubling of the facet junctions you'll miss at 10x but can't unsee at 40x. She was disappointed but not surprised. She walked out with a better understanding of her grandmother's taste and a plan to reset it anyway because she loved the ring.
Weighing the stone helps if it's loose. Diamond density is 3.52. Cubic zirconia is around 5.6 - noticeably heavier for the same size. You can buy a cheap carat scale and compare to known carat weights by millimeter size. But that won't catch a lab diamond, which weighs exactly the same as a mined one. And that's the real headache now: lab-grown diamonds are chemically identical. A simple diamond tester that measures thermal conductivity will say "diamond" for both. Only a trained eye under high magnification - looking for growth patterns, fluorescence, and inclusion signatures - can tell them apart, and even then sometimes only a machine can do it.
If you're holding a stone that passed the breath test and looks sharp under a loupe, you still don't know what you have. You know it's not glass. You know it's probably not CZ. It could be a natural diamond. It could be a CVD lab diamond with HPHT post-treatment, which is most of them today. It could be a high-grade moissanite. The advice I give clients is this: wear the ring, enjoy it, and if you need to know - for insurance, for sale, for peace of mind - pay the $80 to $150 for a grading report from a reputable lab. The shortcut doesn't exist.
