How long does it take to have an engagement ring engraved?

I engraved a platinum band last Tuesday while the client waited. Whole thing took 22 minutes, including the time I spent re-aligning the lettering because the inside curve was slightly uneven. Machine engraving is fast.

For most engagement rings, budget 15 to 30 minutes if the engraving is simple: names, a date, a short phrase, inside the band. That's with a diamond-tipped machine engraver. I can usually do it same-day in my studio, as long as the bench isn't stacked with repairs.

Hand engraving is a different animal. That's cutting the metal with a graver, one stroke at a time, and it takes longer. A short line of script inside a ring might run an hour. Something with flourishes, a small monogram, or outside-the-band lettering can take two to three hours, sometimes more if I'm doing it right and the client wants a specific calligraphic style.

What actually slows the job down: ring width, metal hardness, and whether the ring is already finished. A 1.8mm 18k gold band is easier and faster than a 6mm platinum band. Platinum work-hardens as you cut, so if I'm hand-engraving platinum I go slower and anneal more often, and if the ring is a 6mm platinum band with a long inscription, that single ring can eat an entire afternoon.

Laser engraving is the exception. It can be very fast, maybe five to ten minutes once the machine is set up, and it'll do photorealistic prints if that's what you want. But I don't love it for rings meant to last. The mark sits on the surface and can wear thin in a decade. A hand-cut or deep machine-cut line ages better.

If the ring needs to be resized first, add a few days to a week. You don't engrave before sizing; the sizing can distort or partially remove the lettering. I've seen that happen twice with rings people brought from mall shops. Also, if you're ordering a brand-new custom ring with engraving from the start, add a day or two to the fabrication timeline, not weeks. We do the engraving after final finishing, just before hand-off.

For a simple machine engraving inside an engagement ring, plan for same-day service if the jeweler has the equipment and the bench time. Hand engraving, plan for a few days. If you need it done in under an hour, ask for machine or laser, and if the jeweler tells you they can hand-cut a long sentence in twenty minutes, they're lying or they're doing shallow scribble work you won't be able to read in ten years.
