How often should I have my engagement ring professionally cleaned?

Every six months. That's the short answer. Bring it in twice a year and I'll give it a good ultrasonic bath, a steam blast, and a thorough inspection under magnification. Most of the "cleanings" I do are really just excuses to check the prongs.

Here's why the six-month rhythm works. Your ring collects a slurry of hand lotion, soap residue, dead skin, and cooking oil, none of which you want baking into a setting. After about four months, even a well-maintained ring starts looking a little flat. By six, the gunk under the center stone is thick enough that an at-home soak won't touch it. You can dip and brush all you like-and you should, weekly-but you're not getting under a pavé bridge without a steam cleaner.

There are exceptions. If you wear your ring at the gym, in the garden, or while kneading bread, bump that to every three to four months. A client named Elena came in last year with a ring so packed with clay from her pottery wheel that the diamond wasn't sparking at all. I didn't even recognize the stone until I steamed it. On the other hand, if your ring is a simple solitaire with a plain band and you're fastidious about removing it for showers and dishes, once a year is honestly fine. I'll still want to look at the prongs, but the cleaning part won't be an emergency.
