About 40% of the engagement rings I built last year had a lab-grown center. Last month, a client named Olivia came in with a 2.74 carat oval, F/VS1, IGI graded, that she’d bought online for $2,100. She wanted a simple 18k yellow gold solitaire - 2mm half-round band, no pavé, no halo, just six prongs holding that bright stone. The ring took about five weeks from wax to final polish.

A lab-grown diamond engagement ring is exactly what it sounds like: an engagement ring with a diamond that was grown in a factory rather than mined from the earth. Gemologically, the stone is a diamond - carbon crystallized in the cubic system, hardness 10, same refractive index and dispersion as a natural diamond. It’s not a simulant. Not cubic zirconia. Not moissanite. It’s a diamond. The only difference is origin.

Most stones are grown one of two ways. High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) mimics the earth’s process, using a carbon seed and a molten metal catalyst under immense pressure and heat. Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) breaks down a carbon-rich gas in a vacuum chamber, depositing diamond layer by layer onto a seed plate. The majority of CVD stones on the market now get an HPHT post-treatment to knock out any brownish undertone. Five years ago, you could often spot a CVD diamond under magnification - faint growth striations, a slightly grayish bodycolor. Today, top-tier production is optically indistinguishable from natural to a trained eye. You need spectroscopy to tell them apart.

IGI is the standard for lab-grown grading reports. GIA issues them too, but the report language is different - no origin narrative, just a plain statement that the stone was lab-grown. Don’t pay a premium for the GIA report on a lab diamond. It won’t hold the same weight as it does for a natural stone, and the diamond won’t care.

This gets me to the part I have to say, even if the industry hates it. The price floor is collapsing. I’ve watched a 1 carat F/VS1 round lab-grown go from about $800 wholesale in 2019 to under $200 today. Larger stones even steeper. That’s good for a buyer right now. For resale, it’s a problem. I tell every client: buy the stone because you love it, plan to wear it for life, and assume the trade-in value is zero. Because in ten years, it might be close. Olivia knew that. She’d already decided she didn’t want to start a marriage with a five-figure mined diamond, and she had no illusions about upgrading later. The ring came out beautifully - warm, slightly domed gold edge against that icy white stone, fire in the California sun. I handed it over on a Thursday. She wore it out of the studio and left her sunglasses on my bench.
